WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A THRILLER FILM? (Generic convention)




Conventions are what you would expect to see in a certain genre, The conventions of a thriller are low key lighting, quick cuts of the shots, shadows, tension music, black and white shots and finally a protagonist in mercy of the antagonist.


Here are some examples of what conventions you would expect to see in the sub genres:

Horror genre –
Some things you would expect to see in a horror genre:

  • blood
  • villain
  • damsel in distress
  • heroic male or female
  • weapons
  • dark colours
  • scary settings
  • Living dead/monsters
  • extreme weather


Science fiction-
  • spaceships
  • aliens
  • rockets
  • vibrant colours
  • high advanced technology
  • abstract outfits
  • silver and metal objects
  • futuristic sounds
  • wide range of different races and species
  • lasers
  • space setting


Characters.

Characters carry a wide range of  genre from psychos, to menaced women or to  victims that are usually on the run from the police. The protagonist is usually is an ordinary citizen that becomes affect by danger although the protagonist could be someone already witnessed danger like a police officer. In thrillers the protagonist is usually cast by a male but women leads or become frequently more common. In a theme such as a psychological thriller the protagonist may not be running from anything but be fighting with his own mind and the suspense usually comes from the characters trying to mess with each others minds.
