That those lines punch as hard as they do — you’ll never look at Chianti the same way again  — has plenty to do with Anthony Hopkins and utterly horrifying set pieces. Based on Bret Easton Ellis’s mind-altering novel of the same name, the film follows 1980s yuppie Patrick Bateman as he blurs the lines between reality and homicidal, anti-social fantasies. The deeper his outward lifestyle of wealth and superficiality, the more twisted and gruesome his mind becomes. Starring Christian Bale, Jared Leto and Willem Dafoe








The Sixth Sense, is a 1999 American supernatural thriller, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The films tells the story of Cole Sear who is an isolated boy who is able to see and talk to the dead. As well as this, an equally troubled child psychologist who tries to help him. The film was the second highest grossing film in 1999 grossing at $293 million domestically and $672 million worldwide. From this, the film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best supporting Actor and Best supporting actress. The film gained a very positive reaction and reviews and Osment in particular was singled out for his acting.








Inception (2010) is science fiction heist thriller film, written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The Film stars Hollywood Favourite Leonardo DiCaprio as a professional thief who steals information by entering the subconscious and is offered a chance to have his criminal history erased as payment for a task seemingly-impossible: "inception". "Inception" is he implantation of another person's idea into a target's subconscious.Inception has grossed over $800 million worldwide. Inception appeared on over 273 critics' lists of the top ten films of 2010, being picked as No.1 on 55 of those lists. The Film also won many awards such as Academy Awards for Best cinematography. Bafta for best Special visual effects

Steven Spielberg, is an American director, producer, screenwriter, and editor. n a prolific career spanning more than four decades his films have spanned many themes and genres. Spielberg's early science-fiction and adventure films, such as Jaws(1975) and E.T.(1982). Spielberg won theAcadmey award for best director for Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. Some other of Spielberg's films include War Horse(2011), Jurassic Park(1993) and Indiana Jones Raiders Of The Lost Ark(1981).





Quentin Tarantino,  is an American filmmaker, screenwriter, and actor.  In the early 1990s, he began his career as an independant filmmaker with the release of Resovouri Dogs in 1992; regarded as a classic and cult hit, it was called the "Greatest Independent Film of All Time". Its popularity was boosted by his second film, Pulp Fiction (1994), a black comedy crime film that was a major success both among critics and audience. Tarantino's films have garnered both critical and commercial success. He has received many industry awards, including two Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, two 
BAFTA Awards.


Sir Alfred Hitchcock was an English film director and producer, He has also been called the "The Master of Suspense".Over a career spanning more than half a century, Hitchcock fashioned for himself a recognisable directorial style. His stylistic trademarks include the use of camera movement that mimics a person's gaze. Psycho is arguably Hitchcock's best-known film.




Christopher Nolan. is an English-American film director, screenwriterproducer and editor. He is one of the highest-grossing directors in history, and among the most successful and acclaimed filmmakers of the 21st century. Nolan has directed films such as The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005-12), Inception (2010) and Interstellar (2014). 
Nolan's films are rooted in philosophical, sociological and ethical concepts, exploring human morality, the construction of time. His nine films have grossed over US$4.2 billion worldwide and garnered a total of 26 Oscar nominations and seven awards

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A THRILLER FILM? (Generic convention)




Conventions are what you would expect to see in a certain genre, The conventions of a thriller are low key lighting, quick cuts of the shots, shadows, tension music, black and white shots and finally a protagonist in mercy of the antagonist.


Here are some examples of what conventions you would expect to see in the sub genres:

Horror genre –
Some things you would expect to see in a horror genre:

  • blood
  • villain
  • damsel in distress
  • heroic male or female
  • weapons
  • dark colours
  • scary settings
  • Living dead/monsters
  • extreme weather


Science fiction-
  • spaceships
  • aliens
  • rockets
  • vibrant colours
  • high advanced technology
  • abstract outfits

  • futuristic sounds
  • wide range of different races and species
  • lasers
  • space setting


Characters.

Characters carry a wide range of  genre from psychos, to menaced women or to  victims that are usually on the run from the police. The protagonist is usually is an ordinary citizen that becomes affect by danger although the protagonist could be someone already witnessed danger like a police officer. In thrillers the protagonist is usually cast by a male but women leads or become frequently more common. In a theme such as a psychological thriller the protagonist may not be running from anything but be fighting with his own mind and the suspense usually comes from the characters trying to mess with each others minds.

WHAT IS A THRILLER



Thriller Film is a genre that revolves around anticipation and suspense. The aim for Thrillers is to keep the audience alert and on the edge of their seats. The protagonist in these films is set against a problem – an escape, a mission, or a mystery. The main convections of a thriller low lighting, tension music, montage of shots, shadows. No matter what sub-genre a Thriller film falls into, it will emphasise the danger that the protagonist faces. The tension with the main problem is built on throughout the film and leads to a highly stressful climax. The cover up of important information from the viewer is a common element.  plot twists and cliffhangers are used extensively. A thriller is usually a villain-driven plot.



Sub-Genres of Thriller 

  • Action Thriller (examples; Die Hard, Kill bill)

    An Action Thriller uses physical action to create suspense within the film. Like a traditional Action film, this sub-genre will often have continuous motion and action including physical stunts, chases, fights, battles, and races. Often, these scenes will contribute to the overall sense of danger that the protagonist is facing.
  • Crime Thriller (examples; The Fugitive, The Usual Suspects
Crime Thriller film is a sub-genre that incorporates the suspenseful aspects of a thriller with a crime film plot. This sub-genre's plot usually centers on a serial killer, murderer, robbery, or manhunt. As opposed to traditional crime films, the storyline focuses both around the criminal and the protagonist. Crime Thrillers use both action and psychological aspects to build tension and suspense.
  • Film Noir Thriller( examples; Sunset Boulevard, Sweet smell of success) 
A style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace. The term was originally applied (by a group of French critics) to American thriller or detective films made in the period 1944–54
  • Science Fiction Thriller ( examples; District 9, Aliens)
Science Fiction is a type of genre where by the premise is that the events being described are taking place in a reality other than the one you are currently experiencing. This is either Long Time ago (Star Wars), Alternate Present (The Terminator, Twilight Zone, Independence Day) or Future (Dark Star, Silent Running). Science Fiction usually deals with hardware, technology and aliens (or other species).

These are good examples of thriller movies because they contain suspense and anticipation. Both contain a problem that involves danger  which needs to be resolved. The more you watch the movie the more you become enticed and find it hard to look away.
